Toyota’s third driver, Kamui Kobayashi, steps in for Timo Glock at short notice during Friday’s free practice sessions taking place as part of the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. The German is ill and must rest for the remainder of the weekend.
This will be the first time the reigning GP2 Asia Series champion will be at the wheel of a single-seater in an official session, even though the 23-year-old driver extensively tested the Toyota last winter.
Glock caught a cold and has a fever. The team doctor has advised him to rest completely to maximize his chances of participating in the qualifying session tomorrow and the race on Sunday.
« It is regrettable that Timo is not feeling well today, » said the Japanese driver. « But I am grateful to the team for trusting me to drive the car during the practice sessions for this Japanese Grand Prix. I have already driven the TF109 and I am excited to try it out at Suzuka, even if it’s just for practice. I will do my best to contribute to the team’s preparations and of course I wish Timo a very speedy recovery. »
