Standings after the Singapore GP

The spectators and viewers were dazzled during this magnificent Singapore Grand Prix, marked by events throughout the race. For this second night race in Formula 1 history, Lewis Hamilton claimed the victory. McLaren-Mercedes is performing well, as their number 2 driver, Heikki Kovalainen, also finished in the points with a 7th position. On the podium, we find two drivers who had been waiting a long time to experience this special moment. Timo Glock for Toyota is 2nd and, notably, Fernando Alonso is 3rd with Renault, ending this hectic week on a very positive note. Sebastian Vettel finally took 4th place, although he was in contention for the victory, while the two Brawn drivers also scored points. They are expertly managing their lead in the championship, even though Jenson Button gained a point on Rubens Barrichello. Robert Kubica with BMW is the last driver to score points. Ferrari was nonexistent, more focused on preparing for the 2010 season. Williams and Nico Rosberg could be very disappointed as the German was virtually on the podium. Both Toro Rosso drivers, as well as Mark Webber, retired due to brake failures. Force India returned to its early-season position at the back of the grid.

In the driver standings, there is a status quo at the top of the championship. Button has a 15-point lead over Barrichello and 25 over Vettel, who is still mathematically in the race. Webber and Räikkönen are out of the title race but are still 4th and 5th with 51.5 and 40 points. With his 10 points, Hamilton moves ahead of Rosberg to claim the 6th place (37 against 30.5 points). Alonso and Glock are closing in on the 7th position with 26 and 24 points, respectively. The Spaniard gains two places and the German climbs three. These are the best progressions of the week. Trulli drops to 10th place while Kovalainen (down 1 place) joins Massa (down 2 places) in 11th position, both with 22 points. Heidfeld remains 13th, with his teammate just behind after gaining a point in Singapore. Fisichella thus falls to 15th place. Sutil, Buemi, and Bourdais are still at the bottom.

In the constructors’ standings, only one change with Renault moving ahead of BMW to take 7th place. The German manufacturer is therefore 8th, although with one more point. Force India and Toro Rosso still have 13 and 5 points respectively. At the top of the standings, Brawn GP could become champion next week in Japan. The English constructor has widened its lead over Red Bull with 153 points compared to 110.5. Far behind, the battle promises to be exciting between Ferrari, still 3rd, and McLaren, which now trails the Scuderia by three points. Toyota gains some breathing room in 5th position compared to Williams. The Japanese company, at home next weekend, firmly secures this 5th place.
