The information published in the Belgian press this Wednesday explains how the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the venue for the country’s Formula 1 race, has lost its right to hold the event for the next seventeen years. It is believed that the decision follows a 2007 complaint filed by people living near the legendary track.
With Spa having lost its place on the F1 calendar in 2003 and 2006, the 2010 races and for many years seem to be in doubt as well, according to reports published in the country from Lesoir.
The publication describes how the Council of State suspended the license for the Spa-Francorchamps circuit and related facilities capable of hosting a Grand Prix until 2026, highlighting that the decision comes more than two years after the initial complaint was filed by local residents and the association Mute.
« The viability of the entire circuit may be called into question », stated the circuit manager, adding that he will contest the government’s decision. The Council of State added the following text concerning noise pollution in the region: « If it exists, the environmental impact study is seriously inadequate and incomplete. »
The Council of State thus suspended the operating license.
