Formula 1 drivers have been warned that they will face severe penalties for cutting any chicane during the Italian Grand Prix, which will start at 2 p.m.
Shortly before the qualifying session for the Monza race, F1 race director Charlie Whiting wrote to the teams to warn them that the FIA would be uncompromising with drivers who take shortcuts at the chicanes. He stated that the FIA would rule on any car that has all four wheels on the upper part of the chicane, which would constitute a chicane cut.
Whiting stated before the qualifying session: « In qualifying, every lap during which a driver cuts a chicane will be deleted. Except to avoid an accident, if a driver cuts a chicane three times during the race, a drive-through penalty will automatically be given. Three additional cuts will result in another penalty. »
Whiting concluded by saying that any chicane negotiated during the race that provided an advantage to a driver will also be penalized. However, he specified that the first lap will be exempt from this rule unless a clear advantage has been gained.
