Belgian GP: Fernando Alonso’s favorite circuit

Only a few days after securing 6th place in Valencia at the European Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso headed to Spa-Francorchamps for another race weekend in Belgium. Simply put, technically and historically speaking, it’s the Spaniard’s favorite. He will be able to showcase all his talent on this exceptional track.

Because the turns on the circuit are impressive, a lap is very long (over 7 km), and there are also long straight lines. The R29 will need to be efficient to withstand all these constraints. The setup will also be crucial to be fast throughout the weekend.

Fernando, you scored three points in Valencia. Do you think you got the most out of this weekend?

« It is certain that we were disappointed after the qualifying session, as we thought we were competitive enough and were aiming for a higher position on the starting grid. But we had a brake issue. The teams are so competitive this year that every tenth of a second matters. Moreover, the times are very tight, especially during qualifying. We performed better during the race, and scoring three points is a decent result considering that we started from eighth place. I would have liked to thank my Spanish fans with a better result, but to be completely honest, I think we got the most out of this race. »

Spa is one of your favorite circuits. Why is it so special?

« It is one of the traditional circuits on the calendar. It is part of F1 history and the atmosphere there is special. All drivers love racing at Spa, which presents one of the most interesting challenges on the calendar. The fast corners are impressive, especially Eau Rouge and Pouhon. It’s always a real pleasure to drive an F1 car on this circuit. »

What are your expectations for this weekend?

« Spa is a circuit where it is essential to have a very complete car: the lap is long and it is, therefore, important to fine-tune the setup to be competitive in all sectors. The circuit features fast corners, slow corners, and long straights where a good top speed is indispensable for overtaking or defending a position, especially approaching Les Combes. Our car has been performing well in the last few Grand Prix, so I think we can be fast at Spa. »
