Romain Grosjean has been involved in motorsport since he was 14, but born to a Swiss father and a French mother, the new Renault driver is making waves between the two nations.
For the Swiss, of course, Grosjean will always be their compatriot, but for the French, the situation is the same… so Grosjean… French or Swiss?
The answer remains unknown, genetically speaking… but in motorsport, Grosjean is French. The driver holds his super license in the tricolor colors and supports his nationality in front of the media.
Thus, to a Swiss daily on Sunday, Grosjean explained: « I was born in Geneva but I am French in motorsport. It is France that has always supported me, Switzerland has never helped me. »
« If you look at my career, after my victory in the Swiss F3000, I went to France because it was the FFSA (Fédération Française du Sport Automobile) that supported me. Later, Renault backed me, and without the support of the French brand, I wouldn’t have been able to continue my career… » he concludes in the newspaper Le Matin.
To simplify, Grosjean, born in Geneva, has dual nationality – Franco-Swiss or Helvetic-French – but has chosen to represent the colors of France in his racing career. Grosjean’s helmet, for example, has blue as the main color, and it is the Marseillaise – the French anthem – that will play on the podium in the event of future victories.
