Saturday: At Renault, mixed feelings tonight

Renault participated today in the 11th qualifying session of the 2009 World Championship. Fernando Alonso qualified in 8th position while Romain Grosjean will start from 14th place for tomorrow’s race. Previously, the drivers were certainly hindered by the interruption of the practice session. The results were mediocre for Alonso (15th) but good for Grosjean with a 10th fastest time.

This afternoon, the Franco-Swiss fulfilled his contract and his objective by competing against the best in Q2. As for the reigning world champion, he barely managed to enter Q1, but the battle was too tough to hope for better than an 8th place.

Fernando Alonso – 15th and 8th:

« It was very hot today and the session was difficult. At the beginning, it seemed like we could finish 4th or 5th, but we realized after Q1 that we couldn’t be as competitive. Of course, I’m not satisfied starting from 8th position, but that’s where we were in Q2. I guess it reflects the potential of the car. I’m disappointed for all the fans and would have liked to offer them a better performance. I’ll do my best tomorrow during the race. »

Romain Grosjean – 10th and 14th:

« I am satisfied with entering Q2 for my first F1 qualifying session. It was the goal I set for myself. I want to thank the whole team, as well as Fernando, for the help they have given me. Competing against the best drivers in the world provides an incredible feeling, and I can’t wait to race my first Grand Prix. I will do my best to meet expectations and deliver what is expected of me tomorrow.

Pat Symonds – Executive Director of Engineering:

« We expected better in qualifying today, even after a third practice session disrupted by a neutralization. This morning, the car seemed good, and we thought we could get closer to the top of the grid with Fernando. Romain, on the other hand, has continued his very sensible approach to the weekend. He can be proud of his performance on a difficult track, and I am sure he will have a solid race tomorrow. »
