Felipe Massa plans a return to competition this year for his national Grand Prix in Brazil as he continues to make good progress in his recovery phase from the head injury he sustained in Hungary three weeks ago. The Brazilian suffered a concussion with skull and left eye damage after being struck by a spring that landed squarely on his helmet.
Massa is now at home after being discharged several days ago from the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo and hopes to return to Formula 1 as soon as possible. His goal is his home race next October: « I am very eager to race again, I hope I can participate in the Brazilian Grand Prix, » Massa told the Brazilian television channel Globo. « But it’s not up to me to decide, it’s up to the doctors. I have to show that I will be capable of completing a Grand Prix. »
Whatever happens, he will have to undergo a medical and optical test at the FIA offices before being authorized to drive a Formula 1 car. « I think I’m going to do a few laps in a kart to prepare myself. Then, I will go to the FIA to take the exams and obtain the authorization to return to racing. »
Massa added that he did not remember the accident itself but just waking up in the hospital in Hungary: « I experienced the accident, but I was asleep. I didn’t see the wall or the spring. Many people ask me: ‘Did you see the wall coming?’ But I didn’t see any wall or spring hitting me, I saw nothing. The spring hit my head and I fell asleep. When I woke up in the hospital, I felt strange things. I saw that my eye was very swollen, but I could handle seeing it. I could move my arms, I could move my legs, I could move everything. »
He confirmed that Barrichello feels no guilt about this incident after receiving a visit at his home from his colleague last week: « Not at all, » added the Ferrari driver. « He didn’t even know I was behind him. It’s not a problem. We are really good friends and what happened was meant to happen, it could have been someone else’s spring. »
