Brazilian Nelson Piquet confirmed today that he has been dismissed from the Renault F1 Team. Piquet thus confirms his replacement for the European Grand Prix in Valencia (Spain) on August 23rd. The Brazilian does not give a name for his replacement.
For more than a month, Piquet had been under pressure from the Renault team, which was demanding results. The Brazilian was on an ejector seat. Much like Bourdais at Toro Rosso, his relationships with the leadership team, and especially the director – in this case, Flavio Briatore – had significantly deteriorated.
At midday on its website, Nelson Piquet released a press statement. The young Brazilian asserts that Renault will not let him race in the next Grand Prix, nor in the following ones of this 2009 season.
« I received a note from the Renault F1 Team notifying me of their intention to terminate my contract during the season, » explains Piquet in the statement. « Nevertheless, I thank the small group that supported me within the Renault team, even though I am really very disappointed. »
« On the other hand, I was in the worst period of my career and I am glad it’s ending with the conclusion of my contract at Renault. I will be able to return to top form and try to rebuild my reputation as a victorious driver. »
The Brazilian does not mention any names for a possible replacement, but Grosjean, who was present in a test with the R29 single-seater in Duxford last week, is still the favorite. He may have already been appointed.
