A few hours after the BMW conference to announce their withdrawal from Formula 1 at the end of 2009, Robert Kubica’s manager – the team’s No. 1 driver – officially declared the Polish driver as free and on the transfer market.
BMW announced on Wednesday its withdrawal from Formula 1 by the end of 2009 in order to align with a strategic realignment of the group. With the team leaving, it obviously leaves two factories behind, with one in Hinwil, Switzerland (Sauber) and one in Munich, Germany (BMW Motorsport). But the team also leaves two drivers without seats. Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld no longer have a team for 2010. They are therefore back on the driver market.
Robert Kubica has been a driver for the team since the 2006 season and had a contract until the end of 2010. As a result, the Pole finds himself in a delicate situation in the short term. He is even considering Rally if he does not find a free seat in Formula 1.
« There were no signs within the team that could have indicated such a thing. We take note of this, » commented Morelli, Kubica’s manager, to the Gazzetta dello Sport. « Robert [Kubica] was under contract until 2010, but now he is officially on the transfer market! »
Not knowing what future the Pole will have, one can consider him in Rally. Kubica had commented a few days earlier on his passion for rallying and why not follow Räikkönen into the WRC – World Rally Championship.
« I am a very big fan of Rally. I love this discipline, the cars, and especially the bravery of the drivers; I admire them. »
« I would like to be able to do rallying from time to time, just for fun, and if the opportunity arises for me to do an entire season, I would study it carefully depending on where I am in my Formula 1 career… » he warned in the magazine F1 Racing last week.
