The future of the BMW team in Formula 1 might be decided today, Wednesday, as several well-founded rumors suggest that the German car manufacturer may withdraw from the sport at the end of the season.
An emergency press conference will be held at BMW’s headquarters in Munich, where it is suggested that the automaker will announce the end of its participation in F1.
The guests at this press conference stated that they were called regarding the current development of the team in motorsport.
The press conference will be held in the presence of Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the board of BMW, Klaus Draeger, the head of development, and Mario Theissen, director of BMW Motorsport. The presence of these individuals indicates that the announcement will be very significant.
BMW executives declined to comment on the content of the press conference, but they confirm the importance of the news.
BMW had hoped to fight for the world championship this year, but instead the F1.09 is synonymous with underperformance. Its struggles, combined with the abandonment of KERS, in which BMW had heavily invested, are likely to have played a role in any decision regarding the future of the team.
Despite a difficult start, Theissen repeatedly emphasized his team’s commitment, which has not changed over the months.
“We analyzed and evaluated the situation of our F1 program before the start of the season in February,” said Theissen in May. “It is overall very positive and this judgment has not changed.”
« Apparently, everyone is disappointed with the sports results. »
However, sources indicate that a review meeting was scheduled for July where the future of the team would be decided. This is indeed what is at stake today.
If BMW were to confirm this information, it would be the second car manufacturer to withdraw in eight months after Honda last December.
