This tenth round of the F1 World Championship in Hungary was of course marked by the terrible accident of Felipe Massa during the qualifying sessions, but the sport must go on, and the race did indeed take place. Today, two drivers who were aiming for victory retired. They are Fernando Alonso on Renault, the poleman, and Sebastian Vettel on Red Bull. No points for them. So who won this Grand Prix? Well, a certain 2008 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, won his first race for McLaren since China 2008. He maintained his lead throughout the GP, leaving behind him Kimi Räikkönen on Ferrari and Mark Webber, who limited the damage for Red Bull. The second McLaren driver, Heikki Kovalainen, finished 5th and scored 4 points right behind Nico Rosberg, who is holding tightly onto 4th place with Williams. The Toyotas made it into the points with Timo Glock in 6th and Jarno Trulli in 8th. The driver caught in between was Jenson Button, who still secured two points for Brawn GP, who had their worst Grand Prix of the season.

In the driver standings, Button is still in the lead, admittedly, but his gap is narrowing against his new runner-up, Webber (70 to 51.5 points). The margin remains comfortable nonetheless. The Australian has moved ahead of Vettel, who had to retire, which is a setback for the German. Barrichello retains his 4th place without new points. Much further back, Rosberg gains two places to position himself in 5th place with 25.5 points just ahead of Trulli with 22.5 and Massa (-2 places) with 22 points. Hamilton makes an impressive leap from 11th to 8th place. He now has 19 points. Close behind are Räikkönen (+1 place) and Glock (-1 place) with 18 and 16 points respectively. Conversely, Alonso is the big loser of this race weekend, dropping three places to 11th position. Kovalainen is just behind with 9 points. No changes at the end of the standings with Heidfeld (-1 place), Buemi, followed by Bourdais and Kubica.
In the constructors’ standings, Brawn GP is still in the lead but once again loses points to Red Bull (4). 114 to 98.5 points. Behind them, the battle for third place will be fierce. At this stage of the season and before the summer break, Ferrari (+1 place) is 3rd with 40 points, followed by Toyota (-1 place) with 38.5 points. McLaren takes 5th place over Williams (28 to 25.5 points). Renault is now far behind even though improvements continue. BMW and Toro Rosso remain in 8th and 9th.
