BMW Motorsport’s subsidiary put on a show this weekend at the Nürburgring circuit. A few days after the German Grand Prix, BMW organized a meeting with its best representatives in each sector where the brand is present. German Nick Heidfeld swapped his F1 single-seater with Australian Superbike rider Troy Corser. Over 700 horsepower and 4 wheels on one side for 200 horsepower and 2 wheels on the other. More than 700 guests for this rare event.
Heidfeld (32 years old) after riding the Superbike: « It’s an incredible experience. Thank you all! I was lucky to be able to scrape my knee on the ground in the corners. It was inevitable and I dreamed of being able to do it. I didn’t think the Superbike was so different from regular motorcycles. There’s much greater grip. The brakes are also impressive, as is the bike’s control, much more efficient than with another machine. I was really surprised and tried to ride to the limit. I still would have liked to do more laps with it! »
Corser (37 years old, double Superbike champion) after trying the BMW Formula 1 F108: « It’s just amazing! The car is so well balanced and the braking is so powerful. The tires are incredibly grippy. The steering is very responsive and provides tremendous sensations. I still can’t believe how the braking can be so strong and so late. I would have really liked to keep the car for one or two more days to reach its limits and see how far I could have gone with it… Thanks to everyone for this test! »
Nick Heidfeld’s teammate, Polish driver Robert Kubica, took the wheel of the F1, leading the team’s second BMW rider in Superbike – Ruben Xaus – with a BMW 320si from the WTCC championship (usually driven by Farfus, Jorg Müller, or Hernandez). Meanwhile, Claudia Hürtgen played the role of taxi driver at the wheel of a BMW M3 GT4 and a BMW M5 Ring to thrill guests who were allowed to hop on board.
Peter Sauber and Mario Theissen – Director of BMW Motorsport: « In these difficult times, we are all the more grateful to our supporters and partners for being there with us. It feels good to feel this support and to receive accolades. We must not forget it as soon as everything goes wrong! »
In the afternoon, Xaus (31 years old) also swapped his Superbike for a WTCC touring car: « It was super fun but I would have liked to play with it longer, I only had two laps… You feel safe and you can go on the grass easily, which is not the case with my bike… The big difference is in the braking. On 4 wheels, you can brake later. But in the end, I prefer my bike. I feel freer on it. »
The day ended with an autograph session in which all the participants took part.
