Bernie Ecclestone believes that Donington Park and Silverstone could share the British Grand Prix in the future to ensure the event remains on the calendar.
Donington Park underwent a true race against time to modernize its facilities at a cost of 80 million pounds (over 92 million euros). The circuit is set to host the Grand Prix in a year’s time. To this end, Ecclestone has hinted at a new possibility that would allow Silverstone to remain relevant.
Speaking to the Independent on Sunday, Ecclestone stated: « If it doesn’t work out, Donington will team up with Silverstone. If Silverstone does everything they promised me, we will return to Silverstone. »
These comments from Ecclestone come nearly a month after Max Mosley and himself hinted at a reprieve for Silverstone during the June race.
However, Silverstone must be able to plan its work to host a race next year.
Damon Hill, president of the British Racing Drivers Club, which owns Silverstone, said: « I’m not in favor of this rotation system. I think it’s an insult. It’s another absurd step to try to extract the most profit and as many benefits as possible for the commercial rights holders. This is not a long-term strategy. »
« I am in favor of a fixed contract for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone because I do not believe that the Donington project is viable. »
