Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel have been informed that they will remain free to race each other as they get closer and closer to the current championship leader, Jenson Button.
The Red Bull Racing duo is the most consistent on the grid this year. On this subject, Button expressed a certain relief that his main rivals are competing against each other.
However, the team principal of the Red Bull team, Christian Horner, made it clear that there would be no favoritism until one of the two men had gained the upper hand over the other.
“We will continue to support our two drivers in the same way,” Horner stated. “There is only one and a half points between them. Obviously, they are both in the running for the title.”
There is a long way to go to catch up with Jenson Button. If and when we reach a point where there is a significant gap and it becomes mathematically impossible for one of them to be champion, then the one who cannot be champion will play a supporting role.
Webber and Vettel have won races this season, so Horner has no more doubts about the quality of his men.
Our drivers are at the top at different stages of their careers and they both work very hard, he added.
« I think we have the best line-up in F1 at the moment … our two men are treated fairly within the team and have identical cars. »
« We can always do better. There are no obvious weaknesses in our arsenal, but as a group, we must keep working in all areas. »
