Max Mosley, the current FIA president, has confirmed that he will not run in the October elections and that he supports Jean Todt’s candidacy.
In a letter sent to all FIA members, Mosley stated that despite pressure from some members, he has decided not to run again.
Thanks to hard work that will result in a new Concorde Agreement ensuring the future of F1 in the coming days, along with other more general advancements, there were few reasons for him to reconsider his intention to step down from his role.
« From a personal standpoint, it will be very difficult for me to change my mind, » wrote Mosley in his letter.
I started a few months ago by reorganizing my family life, which will take effect next October. I have also informed the FIA commissioners that I will not be a candidate. It was becoming increasingly difficult to balance work with my family obligations, especially after the loss of my son. Additionally, I have been feeling for some time that I want to work less. After all, I will soon be 70 years old.
« Consequently, and despite the numerous supports through letters, emails, or other messages I have received, I have decided to confirm my decision. I will not be a candidate in October. »
The former world rally champion, Ari Vatanen is also a serious candidate for the FIA presidency. Mosley put an end to years of speculation about the man he would like to see succeed him. He supports the former Ferrari team principal, Jean Todt.
« I believe that the right person to lead this organization would be Jean Todt, » said Mosley regarding the need to see someone « strong, experienced, and competent » lead the FIA in the future.
« If he accepts this candidature, I think he would be the ideal person to continue my work of the past 16 years. I sincerely hope that you will give him your full support. »
