German GP: A home race for BMW without conviction

This weekend should have been unforgettable for the BMW team, but in the end, it will be like all the others… Since the beginning of the season, the Hinwil team hasn’t measured up to Brawn GP or the other Toyota teams. Therefore, they remain realistic for the coming days, not hoping for any miracles. On a positive note, BMW is bringing a number of new parts, including the most important one, a new double diffuser. Some minor improvements could be possible.
It’s a home race for the team but also for one of the drivers, Nick Heidfeld. He wishes to please his fans – like the designer of his helmet, crafted especially for this occasion – even though his scope of action remains limited. Robert Kubica will be racing on a track that is not one of his favorites. In short, the best is wished for the team…
Robert Kubica – Racing driver:
« The Nurburgring is our home race. Even though things aren’t going well for us this season, there will be many BMW Sauber F1 Team fans. They’ll be crossing their fingers for us. So it’s the right time to put in a strong performance and achieve a good result. However, I must admit that the track itself isn’t one of my favorites. That said, there’s a wide variety of corners with overtaking opportunities. The best of them is the first corner. »
Nick Heidfeld – Race Driver
« It goes without saying that our mid-season performance is far from positive. Especially when we compare our results to date with our initial goals for the season. I hope we can make improvements. This is what everyone on the team is trying to achieve by continuing to work so hard. »
A large number of fans and fan clubs will be present. It is something that motivates me even more. I will participate in this race with a special helmet. This year, it was created by a fan via my website. He will present it to me before the start of Friday’s practice sessions. My best result at the Nurburgring in Formula 1 was in 2005 when I secured pole position and finished second in the race. For me, this track is the most sensational in the world.
Mario Theissen – Director of BMW Motorsport:
We arrive at the German Grand Prix with no satisfaction regarding our current season. After three years of success, this period is challenging for our team. We must overcome it. After all, it’s the same team in Munich and Hinwil. We are all determined to return to the top of the standings. It’s not easy to make up ground without the possibility of testing. Of course, for this weekend, we are bringing a series of mechanical improvements, as well as a new version of our double diffuser. We feel a special connection with the Nürburgring since every BMW product is tested on this track.
