A Heidfeld helmet to turn heads…
The name of the big winner who will have the opportunity to design Nick Heidfeld's helmet for the German Grand Prix has been revealed. Through the German driver's personal website, fans had the opportunity to design their idol's helmet. The contest organizers had the difficult task of choosing a winner from 9,000 entries.
Heidfeld will therefore have a special helmet for his home Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, just like Jenson Button at Silverstone. The winner is a Hungarian named Tamás Simon. His work will be unveiled in a little over a week.
« This helmet stands out from the others, » said BMW driver Nick Heidfeld. « In fact, as soon as I saw it, I thought I could win the race, that was my first impression! »
Jens Munster, professional helmet designer, was also impressed by the model: « Tamás Simon had a great idea, » he explained. « I have never seen a design like this before, whether for a racing driver or an ordinary motorcyclist. The design is composed exclusively of circles that are very well made. The design has clearly been influenced by new technologies. With its spherical shapes, it is reminiscent of industrial robots’ arms and joints. For me, as a professional, this model is one of the most difficult to achieve. »
“I had no preconceived ideas at the start of this adventure,” said Tamás about his design. “I simply got a good inspiration from the situation, I guess I was particularly creative that day.”
After next Sunday’s race (July 12), the helmet will be auctioned via the German television channel RTL. The proceeds will go to ‘Wir helfen Kindern’ (literal: Let’s Help Children), a charity.
