The managing director of Silverstone circuit, Richard Phillips, believes that the circuit deserves to be part of next year’s calendar after the true success of the British Grand Prix last weekend.
The British race is expected to be transferred to Donington Park starting next year, but Bernie Ecclestone suggested this weekend that there was a possibility Silverstone could still host the event.
For his part, Phillips remains hopeful for a return to Silverstone in 2010.
“We have the best and greatest fans in the world and I hope to see them again next year at Silverstone,” said Phillips. “There are increasing concerns about Donington Park’s ability to host the British Grand Prix in 2010 and beyond. Moreover, the words this weekend from Mr. Ecclestone and the FIA are rather reassuring.”
The support of the fans during this weekend undoubtedly had an impact on the future of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
« We have asserted that Silverstone is ready to step in if Donington’s plans fall through, and that remains the case. Silverstone has never been better in terms of attendance. »
« This year, the Grand Prix was phenomenal. It was one of the best races. The event was supported like rarely I’ve seen. We hope to see everyone here again next year, » he continued.
Richard Phillips added: « The support for the Silverstone circuit over the three days from the fans, drivers, and teams was tremendous. The fans have a real affinity with Silverstone, just like the drivers. »
« It is a fantastic circuit. You just have to look at the attendance numbers over the three days of this weekend. The undeniable victory of Sebastian Vettel clearly shows that Silverstone is a very special place. »
