Saturday: Disappointment in the Renault camp

Renault participated today in the seventh qualifying session of the 2009 World Championship. Fernando Alonso qualified in 8th position while Nelson Piquet will start from 17th place for tomorrow’s race.

The Brazilian had a brake problem, which is why he went off the track. It’s another disappointment for him. Fernando Alonso, although virtually in the points, is also disappointed because his fuel load should have played to his advantage. The performance of the R29 is therefore in doubt.

Fernando Alonso – 19th and 8th:

« I have mixed feelings after these qualifications. Q2 was really tough, and I barely made it into Q3 with the 10th fastest time. Our competitiveness and lack of performance only allowed us to achieve the 8th final time. It’s disappointing. Unfortunately, I will start from the dirty side of the track, which will make the start tricky. Nevertheless, I hope to fight for points tomorrow.

Nelson Piquet – 11th and 17th:

« I knew I had a brake problem since the start of qualifying, so I was cautious, but it wasn’t easy because the track was very slippery. On my last run, the problem got worse, and I went off. It’s disappointing, but I remain positive for tomorrow because there are good overtaking opportunities on this circuit. Hopefully, we can have a solid race »

Pat Symonds – Executive Director of Engineering:

« Nelson was unable to get through Q1 because he lost a brake duct. His discs overheated and he went off track. For Fernando, we were hoping for a better position after Q2, but keeping in mind our fuel load, I think we are not in a bad position for the race. »
