As of today, four teams have reportedly paid the necessary deposit to reserve a Cosworth engine supply for the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship.
Going in the same direction as the cost reductions, the independent British company wishes to return to F1 next year, at the initiative of the FIA, by ensuring a low cost of the engines provided. This ‘low-cost’ solution comes as major manufacturers, such as Ferrari or Renault, threaten to leave the sport.
Peter Windsor, one of the executives of the USF1 team, which is expected to enter the 2010 championship, confirmed in Monaco an agreement with the engine supplier.
It was the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport that first revealed the information about a transfer of 2.5 million euros.
The same magazine mentions three other entrants in 2010 who also reportedly paid a deposit for Cosworth, likely including Campos and Epsilon Euskadi with Joan Villadelprat.
« It is true that we are looking to set up a F1 team, » confirmed Villadelprat to the Spanish daily El Pais. « For now, I would say the chances of seeing this project come to fruition are 50%. »
