The Canadian-origin French newspaper La Presse reported Monday that F1’s chief financier, Bernie Ecclestone, invited a businessman from the Quebec city of Montreal and a London financier to explore the possibility of reintroducing the Canadian Grand Prix to the 2010 calendar.
The three meetings held so far have taken place in London at Ecclestone’s offices, and it seems that the businessman, who prefers to remain anonymous for now, is not a representative of the Canadian Commission or the Quebec government. He is not speaking on behalf of the city of Montreal either.
According to the newspaper, there is a strong possibility that Ecclestone will become the next promoter of the Canadian Grand Prix.
In the current economic context, the Briton might agree to lower his demands in order to revive Formula 1 on the North American continent. Car manufacturers and sponsors are reportedly putting pressure on him to bring it back.
The stands at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve have almost never been empty, unlike some venues in other countries.
However, given the ongoing talks between the teams and the FIA regarding future regulations in Formula 1, the fact is that the potential promoters of the Grand Prix do not yet know everything necessary for a contract signing.
