No miracle therefore for the Toyota drivers who started today from the back of the Monaco grid. If we look at their position at the finish, we can see that the team had regained a semblance of competitiveness for today. Trulli and Glock took advantage of the six retirements to secure acceptable places at the finish.
Glock even makes it into the top 10 after Nakajima’s retirement. His teammate, the Italian Jarno Trulli, is only 13th, due to a strategy that didn’t work. The whole team is now turning its attention to Turkey, where a return to form is mandatory if they want to maintain third place in the Constructors’ Championship.
Timo Glock – 10th:
« I must say that finishing in the top 10 was a bit unexpected at the start of the race, especially considering how the weekend unfolded. We had a good pace in the final stint, but when you start from the back of the grid in Monaco, you can’t expect to score points. The weekend started off badly. In Monaco, you need to start the weekend on a good footing and then adjust the car to the track’s evolution. I’m looking forward to Turkey where I hope we can make significant improvements. »
Jarno Trulli – 13th:
« It was a difficult race for me, as we had expected. We had always said it was going to be very tough considering my position on the grid. My strategy didn’t work. I always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in the traffic, which is obviously a real issue on this circuit. Every time I managed to put in a few good laps, I had to slow down because there were cars in front of me and it’s obviously impossible to overtake. Now, we need to forget this weekend and focus on the next race. I am convinced that we will be much more competitive. »
Tadashi Yamashina – Team Principal:
« Even though it was a difficult weekend for us with a disappointing race, the team and both drivers gave their all and were very professional. They never gave up, even after such a result in qualifying. Clearly, we need to look very closely at what went wrong this weekend. Everyone at the factory has worked very hard this season and I am confident we will be present in Turkey. We are still third in the Constructors’ Championship. We must continue to fight with a positive mindset. »
