Monaco GP: An even more improved R29 for Piquet

Nelson Piquet still seems to be on the hot seat within the Renault team. The first European Grand Prix did not have the desired effect even though the Brazilian eventually finished the race. After another disappointment, the Monaco race looms on the horizon.

A good Grand Prix starts with a strong qualifying session because overtaking in the Principality will be difficult once the race begins. Piquet must not miss his Saturday performance in the R29, which will see some improvements compared to Barcelona.

Nelson, you managed to avoid the first corner incident in Barcelona but it was a tough race for you…

« Indeed, I found myself in the middle of the incident and was very lucky to be able to avoid the debris that was on the track. It was difficult to find the right balance of the car in Barcelona, so my race suffered. I did not benefit from all the technical developments of the team on this occasion, which had an impact on my performance, but I hope to have them in Monaco. »

Do you enjoy the Monaco Grand Prix?

« Yes, of course. It’s probably the most famous race in the world, so it’s a real privilege to compete in this legendary Grand Prix. The atmosphere in Monaco is always very good and it’s one of the few races where the public is so close to the action. I used to live in Monaco when I was younger and racing here as a Formula 1 driver is a dream come true! »

What are your goals for this Grand Prix?

« It is almost impossible to overtake on the streets of Monaco, so it is essential to qualify well and fine-tune your race strategy. You cannot afford the slightest mistake: the streets are very narrow and you are constantly just a few millimeters away from the barriers. 100% concentration is paramount. It is very often an eventful race, we have to be ready to seize every opportunity. »
