Even if the budget cap rule is not yet guaranteed 100% for next year, the USGPE team is confident that it will be on the grid in 2010. The American team has finalized its first car design and, according to its sporting director, Peter Windsor, the team is convinced that it has a future in F1.
« The first thing that must be said is that we are very impressed with the way the FIA has made it easier for new teams to enter Formula 1, » said Windsor in an interview with GP Week.
« We wouldn’t be here today without this. Obviously, the new system will favor the arrival of new teams. »
« But from our point of view, it doesn’t change much. We are who we are, we do what we do, and we have planned a budget for three or four years. We have not changed our budget in relation to the new regulations and it includes a large number of zeros. We have our leaders and we have completed the first designs of the car. »
The team is still undecided on whether or not to use KERS in the race. Windsor explains: « There are many variables that depend on the regulation that will be in effect. By making a simple choice, we would not have used the KERS, but it will probably be mandatory for each team. We have to take it into account. You can’t design the car without the element; the KERS will likely be on all cars. Like everyone in Formula 1, we think the device has good and bad points. But is it a complication? Could the additional cost be spent elsewhere? It’s a debatable point. »
