No date for the introduction of KERS at Williams

Williams’ Technical Director, Sam Michael, claims that his team is working tirelessly to introduce its KERS in the race as soon as possible. However, he admitted that no date has been set for the moment.

Williams is the only team looking to develop a system where the stored energy is found in a flywheel, while its competitors use batteries.

Although it is ready, some teams have decided not to use it in every race. Michael believes that as the season progresses, the use of the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) will become more important.

« As the rate of development slows down, KERS will have greater importance, » said Michael.

« We are working tirelessly to install it on the FW31 as soon as possible, but at this stage, I cannot tell you when it will be done. As soon as it’s ready, it will be on the car. »

The technical director, whose team scored only 3.5 points in the first four races, acknowledged that the first part of the season has been frustrating due to missed opportunities.

« The start of the season was very fast, but we did not reach the set objectives in terms of points, which is very frustrating. »

« Our competitors are quickly catching up to us and it will be difficult to maintain a cutting-edge development over them during the year, but that’s our job and we will continue to work. »

He added: « We made some mistakes. In Australia, we had an issue with a wheel nut, which cost Nico [Rosberg] about 10 seconds. In Malaysia, we didn’t switch to intermediate tires at the right time. Finally, in China, we chose the wrong strategy during the safety car period. »
