The public will have the power to change the points system

The president of the FIA, Max Mosley, believes that Formula 1 would be wrong to change its points system in favor of the medals system unless the latter has public support. However, he admits that the introduction of the current system was a mistake.

The World Motor Sport Council, which met last Friday in Monaco, announced that a survey would be conducted among fans to see if they support Bernie Ecclestone’s project. He wants to implement a system identical to that of the Olympic Games with gold, silver, and bronze medals.

And although Mosley admits that the current format of 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points is not ideal, he believes that a new regulatory reform would not bring anything good.

« We will conduct a survey and we will make a decision based solely on the results, » said Mosley in the columns of Gazzetta dello Sport.

« I am against too frequent changes to the points system. It can disorient fans. »

Mosley also opposed the teams: « I was against the decision to ban refueling from 2010, but I think there will still be a lot of spectacle without it. »

« I was against this idea because, in my opinion, it had been part of the show for decades. »

« I trust technology to prevent what happened in the eighties when drivers avoided fighting in the first part of the race to save their brakes and tires. »
