In Free Practice 2, Oscar Piastri lost the rear of his McLaren and caused a yellow flag in the banking turn at the Zandvoort circuit. Approaching at racing speed, Daniel Ricciardo received the yellow flag information just as he was entering the turn. With no escape route at that point and to avoid hitting the McLaren, the Australian driver collided with the high-speed techpro barrier on the right. Not having enough time to prepare for the impact, he broke a bone in his left hand.

Helmut Marko, who oversees the drivers in the Red Bull program, of which AlphaTauri is a part, has explained that Daniel Ricciardo will be visiting a specialized clinic in Barcelona this Saturday and will undergo surgery in the coming days.

He will therefore probably not be recovered for the next Grand Prix, in Monza, next weekend.

« Daniel is currently on his way to Barcelona where he will be operated on tomorrow or Monday; and after this operation, we will see if he will be able to race in Monza. » explained Helmut Marko.

It’s worth noting that Liam Lawson is replacing him this weekend.
