Kevin Magnussen has been penalized with a three-place grid penalty

This was one of the rare times where Kevin Magnussen outperformed his teammate in qualifying. Achieving the 13th fastest time, on Friday, July 28th in Spa, the Danish driver delivered a much better performance than his garage neighbor, who finished 20th.

But, this performance will need to be nuanced. During the second phase of qualifying, the Haas driver impeded Charles Leclerc during a fast lap. Therefore, he was part of the long list of men summoned before the FIA stewards to discuss this action.

Not informed on the radio

After analyzing the images, the man with the number 20 has been penalized with a three-place grid penalty for the sprint race. His final position will therefore be determined tomorrow following the sprint qualifying.

« Magnussen left the track at turn 9 and made contact with the wall. He then rejoined the track and drove on the dry racing line. Leclerc, who was on a fast lap, caught up to Magnussen who did not yield until turn 16. Magnussen explained that he did not think it was safe to move aside on the wet part of the track at high speed and give way to Leclerc, especially between turns 11 and 15. The stewards noted that he had not been informed by his team that Leclerc was behind him until the latter was right behind him at turn 10 », details the FIA.
