McLaren makes the fastest pit stop of the 2022 F1 season

The DHL Fastest Pitstop Award is awarded at each Grand Prix for the fastest pit stop, which consists of changing all 4 tires of the race cars. This season, a special regulation was implemented, suspending the use of automated pneumatic guns. These connected guns allowed the driver to be given the signal to exit the pit box, but several errors resulted in loose bolts or various mistakes due to the speed.

To preserve the mechanics and especially the mechanics, it is now one of the mechanics who gives the Go to the driver with a button that triggers a light.

In 2021, pit stops were therefore slightly faster than this season, with the fastest time set by Red Bull at 1.88 seconds to change the tires. Red Bull was also dominating the rankings with no less than the 8 best times of the year.

In 2022, Red Bull still holds an important position in the top 10 of the best pit stops with 5 of the best times achieved, all with Sergio Perez. However, this year it is McLaren that has recorded the fastest time. The Woking team is the only one to have completed a pit stop in under 2 seconds. It was with Ricciardo in Brazil a few weeks ago.

With a time of 1.98 seconds, McLaren is therefore only one-tenth of a second away from last year’s fastest time, despite the guns automatically signaling that the bolts were properly tightened.

In the top 10, we also find the strong presence of AlphaTauri, with Tsunoda notably appearing 3 times, compared to 1 for Gasly.

DHL has maintained a ranking throughout the season with a points system similar to each F1 race – the top 10 therefore receive points. With this system, it is Red Bull that had the best season and thus finishes first in the pit stop ranking ahead of McLaren, Ferrari, AlphaTauri, Alpine, Aston Martin, Williams, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, and finally Haas.
