Sauber to reach 2023 budget limit with revenue from 6th place in constructors’ rankings
Frédéric Vasseur announced this Sunday that 6th place in the constructors' standings will enable Sauber (Alfa Romeo Racing) to reach the budget ceiling and thus compete on equal terms with the other teams next year.
If the budget is limited in Formula 1 since 2021, not all teams have the financial capacity to reach this limit. In 2023, the budget will be limited to around 145 million euros and Alfa Romeo will reach this budget limit thanks to their good performance in the constructors’ standings.
Alfa Romeo is the 6th team in the Formula 1 constructors’ standings for 2022. With an equal number of points as Aston Martin, it is Alfa Romeo that secured the best race position, allowing the team to move ahead in the rankings.
This 6th position will bring in additional revenue in 2023, around 10 million euros, which will allow Frédéric Vasseur’s team to be at the financial limit authorized by F1 and more.
« There are two aspects that are changing, emotionally, because to be able to compete against Aston Martin is a reward for us since we never imagined we could do it. In the factory, it will also give us a boost.
» explains the Sauber director.
The boost will also be financial. « There is also another aspect that is a little more down-to-earth. The distribution of income in Formula 1 is linked to results, and there is a small difference between each position, which will allow us to reach the limited budget next year. It will give a boost to development. »
Stingy when it comes to the amount, Frédéric Vasseur nonetheless explains that the sum is substantial since it’s over 10 million euros extra that will flow into Hinwil’s finances next year, compared to a 7th place in the championship.
« I had understood that with 2.5 million euros, we did almost nothing, laughs Frédéric Vasseur, referring to the fact that Red Bull, which exceeded the budget in 2021, did not use the difference in competition.
« For us, it’s a little over 10 million, so it’s almost nothing four times over.
This position in the championship was obtained not without stress and suspense, as until the last laps, Vettel could have earned an additional point, which would have given Aston Martin this P6 in the championship.
« It was the goal of the weekend, we came to achieve P6, and we were P6, I am delighted. The race was not excellent for us, I think we focused too much on keeping the Astons behind us during the race, it was a bit tight. When Hamilton was still on track, it was fine, but when he retired, we were really close to falling behind. For us, it’s a great result, it wasn’t the initial objective of the season, I am thrilled for the whole team. »
