Hamilton speeding just before the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton was caught speeding at 84.5 km/h in the pit lane, exiting his pit stall, just before joining the starting grid. With 5 km/h over the speed limit set here at 80 km/h, the seven-time world champion will be fined €500.

The drivers do one or several installation laps just before positioning the cars on the starting grid. Since the grid is occupied by mechanics and other already positioned cars, the single-seaters sometimes go through the pit lane again just to cross it and complete a second lap.

The steering wheels are equipped with a button to activate the speed lock, but it depends on the driver’s activation.
