Last June, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies adopted a bill to accept Lewis Hamilton as an honorary citizen of Brazil. It was on this Monday that the seven-time Formula 1 world champion received his new title in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil.
Hamilton, however, has just officially received his status this Monday, physically present at the Chamber of Deputies in Brasilia for the awarding of a symbolic medal. This is the first time this title has been awarded to a foreigner.
Hamilton holds a special place in the hearts of Brazilian F1 fans. As a fan of Senna, Hamilton never missed an opportunity during his various victories on the Interlagos circuit to pay tribute to the memory of the Brazilian driver who died during a race. Considered a legend by the Brazilians, Hamilton has won the hearts of the fans.
Hamilton, during his acceptance speech, delivered a speech in support of diversity: “As a black athlete, I am deeply committed to changing mindsets and promoting diversity. And I feel incredibly inspired by Brazil, I see so much diversity and I see all that we can accomplish together. We just need to stick together, stay positive, and remain focused on our goals. Not taking ‘no’ for an answer and never giving up.”
(I) I have great memories of Brazil even before having the opportunity to come here. I dedicate this tribute to Senna and his family. When I saw him race at the age of five, I was certain that I wanted to be a world champion. (F) It reminded me of Hamilton.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, stated that Hamilton has already become the idol of all Brazilians. There is no need to introduce him, however, it should be remembered that Lewis Hamilton, thanks to his talent and determination, is also a collector of titles. Lewis Hamilton is British by birth, but Brazilian at heart.

The President Bolsonaro, currently in office, was not invited to the Hamilton award ceremony, not because of any political disagreement between him and Hamilton, but simply because it is not his role to be involved in these presentations.
As a reminder, Lewis Hamilton was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Order of the British Empire a few months ago by Queen Elizabeth II.
