Russell is over the moon but puts things into perspective: “It’s not in qualifying where you score points”
The English driver George Russell has just achieved his first pole position today in Hungary, and what a way to do it. The Mercedes driver has thus secured the best result of the season for Mercedes, and despite his joy, he is focused on the challenging race that awaits him tomorrow.
« Incredible when you see how our Friday was, it was really difficult. It was the worst Friday of the season. We were a bit lost on the directions to take, and then the first turn goes well, I see that the second one goes well too, and when I cross the finish line and see on the arrival sign that I am in first place, it was exceptional.
» exclaims the British driver.
We need to focus on tomorrow’s race. It’s not in qualifying where we score points, and the Ferraris seemed very fast in race simulations on Friday, so we’ll do our best, but it’s really a unique feeling for us to be here.
Lewis Hamilton is very happy that the Mercedes team is on pole thanks to George Russell: « It’s fantastic and I am happy for the team. It’s huge for us to be on pole. Congratulations to George. I will do my job and give my best tomorrow. I have one of the most difficult cars to overtake, so it will be challenging. »
Toto Wolff explained that the tires on Russell’s car were in the perfect temperature window to fully exploit them. He also expressed satisfaction with this performance by stating that he wouldn’t say no to a win.
