At the start of the Grand Prix, it was George Russell, battling with Sergio Perez, who was deemed responsible for the collision between the two drivers. Sergio Perez spun and had to retire later in the race, while George Russell had to pit to change tires. The FIA decided to deduct two additional points from his driver’s license, leaving him with a total of nine points over a 12-month period.
Pierre Gasly made the same mistake as Russell – at the same turn 4 of the Spielberg circuit – but this time with Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin. Starting in a spin, we can clearly see the AlphaTauri slightly veering off its path and making contact with Vettel. The penalty was therefore the same: a 5-second penalty during the race and two points deducted from his driver’s license. Please note that Pierre Gasly now only has 6 points left on his driver’s license within a rolling 12-month period.
Note that Gasly received another penalty for exceeding track limits by 5 seconds, which he was unable to serve during the race.
