Despite the fact that Stefano Domenicali announced a few hours ago that the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will indeed take place and that the organizers assure safety, the drivers are still in discussions.

The drivers have not yet confirmed their participation in the Grand Prix

There was a strange atmosphere this evening in Saudi Arabia due to the explosion, close to the circuit, of an oil depot following a drone attack by the Houthis, a rebel community from Yemen.

The drivers gathered with the GPDA – Grand Prix Drivers Association – as well as the leaders of the FIA and F1, in order to discuss the event and decide on the next steps for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The stakes are obviously economic and, above all, political.

Despite this context of insecurity, Stefano Domenicali earlier announced that the Grand Prix would continue. However, just a few meters behind his announcement, a hilarious scene unfolded: the drivers were still locked in the meeting room, discussing the matter.

They entered the meeting around 10:30 PM local time and they were still there at midnight, which is 1 hour and 30 minutes later. Hamilton stood up, his back to the window, talking to the other drivers, taking turns speaking.

While for the war in Ukraine, the GPDA showed unity in displaying a message of peace, it is highly likely that discussions will revolve around the interest of participating in a race in Saudi Arabia and the stakes it entails.

If the teams and the F1 have already announced that the organization of the GP is maintained, it is still possible that the drivers may decide otherwise.
