Mick Schumacher becomes a reserve driver for Ferrari in 2022
Ferrari has named Mick Schumacher as the reserve driver for the Italian team in 2022, a role that the German will share with Antonio Giovinazzi.
After a challenging but rewarding learning season, Mick Schumacher will continue his journey with Haas in 2022.
In addition to his role as a full-time driver, the son of the Red Baron will also be the reserve driver for Ferrari in 11 out of the 23 races of the upcoming season. This means that if Charles Leclerc or Carlos Sainz cannot race, whichever the reason may be, it is Schumacher who could take the wheel of the legendary Italian car.
Despite numerous mistakes, Mick has overall impressed Mattia Binotto and, according to the latter, deserves the trust that Ferrari gives him.
“I am very happy that he is part of the team,” declared Binotto to Autosport. “He is starting his second season and he is a Ferrari driver, coming from the Ferrari Driver Academy. The reason why we have this academy is simple, we want to identify those who could drive for us in the future.”
I think Mick had a good season. Towards the end of the year, he was able to get closer to the other cars while Haas did not develop their car. This means that he has improved, he has made good progress in terms of speed.
The boss of the Scuderia also had a word for Antonio Giovinazzi, who lost his seat at Alfa Romeo. He too will be the reserve driver for Ferrari, for 12 races in 2022.
(I) I always rely on Antonio because he has proven to be a good driver. He will be given a complete simulator program to adapt to the new race cars, (he) concluded.
