Oscar Piastri will participate in the private tests in Abu Dhabi
Alpine will offer its reserve driver a first opportunity to drive in Abu Dhabi.
The current leader of the Formula 2 championship, Oscar Piastri, will take part in the Abu Dhabi tests next week, following the last Grand Prix of the season at the wheel of the Alpine on December 14th.
These trials will bring together two parallel programs as teams will be able to run their current single-seaters by entrusting them to young drivers, but they will also test the future 18-inch tires for 2022 with modified F1 cars.
“I’m looking forward to taking part in these tests,” Piastri told Motorsport.com. “It will be somewhat my first official day in my new role as the team’s reserve driver before next year. Every day in an F1 car is quite special, but it’s really cool to be able to drive the current car with other competitors on the track in a more or less competitive setting. I thank the team for this opportunity, I’m really excited to be there and work on a full test program that day.”
Laurent Rossi, the CEO of Alpine, talks about a well-deserved reward. This test will be part of his development program as he prepares to become the team’s reserve to help and assist Fernando, Esteban, and our development teams on and off the track in 2022. In addition, Oscar will familiarize himself with the current car. We are looking forward to 2022, and our current drivers will experience the new 18-inch tires. This will be a good opportunity to learn more about the challenges we will face on all fronts next year,” he concluded.
Oscar Piastri will not be having his first experience in Formula 1 as he has already driven older models in the past. Next season, he will spend many hours in the Alpine simulator.
