Antonio Giovinazzi is still upset with Alfa Romeo

As his dismissal is now confirmed, Antonio Giovinazzi believes that his performances against Kimi Räikkönen should have allowed him to keep his seat.

« I am very disappointed with Alfa Romeo’s choice,” he recently declared on the Italian radio station Formula Passion. “I am leaving F1 even though I am having my best season as a regular driver and regardless of the points, in qualifying as in the race I almost always outperform Kimi, who is nevertheless a world champion and a good reference.”

The Italian tends to forget a little too quickly that points are scored on Sundays and not on Saturdays. In this respect, Räikkönen has quite clearly dominated his young teammate since 2019 (57 points to 19). Furthermore, contrary to what Giovinazzi claims, it is not uncommon to see number 99 finish at a very good distance from the Finn. As for Saturdays, despite Räikkönen’s poor performances especially at the beginning of the season, Giovinazzi has been beaten five times in the last nine qualifying sessions by his forty-year-old teammate.

Despite this, the Italian continues to criticize the upcoming arrival of Guanyu Zhou, who will bring a budget of 30 million euros to Alfa Romeo. « It’s a shame that a newcomer bringing in a lot of money is putting a driver like me out of a job, but unfortunately, this scenario is not rare in Formula 1. »

The Transalpin will nevertheless keep a very good memory of his collaboration with the one nicknamed Iceman. Fortunately, I had an honest teammate during my three years at Alfa Romeo with Kimi. Finding someone loyal in F1 is rare. Kimi helped me a lot and played a big role in my career because he was a great reference for me. Certainly, he is not very talkative but he always helped me when I asked for advice. He never misled me, he was really very generous with me, he concluded.
