The Hamilton/Verstappen incident divides
As the revision of the recent duel in Brazil between the two contenders for the world title is currently underway, several drivers have expressed their views on the subject.
Since his arrival in Formula 1, and more particularly since 2016, Max Verstappen’s defenses have often been the subject of much debate. His recent duel against Lewis Hamilton at the Brazilian Grand Prix is no exception.
Several drivers (both current and former) have given their opinion on the incident and whether or not it needs to be reviewed. Juan Pablo Montoya, who executed a splendid maneuver on a certain Michael Schumacher at Interlagos 20 years ago, is categorical about what happened on the 48th lap, at turn 4.
« Honestly, I think Max sees things this way: if he and Lewis crash, he gains points,” he stated on the show “This Week with Will Buxton.” « Look how close Lewis was to him, he had clearly overtaken him entering the braking zone. Max had no chance of making the corner having braked so late, I don’t think he had any intention of taking that corner, do you see what I mean?
Mika Häkkinen also gave his opinion in his column for Unibet. « This is one of the examples that show how Max is ready to attack. Keeping his steering wheel open is a way to intimidate his opponent but it can also cause a collision. But I’m not sure that intimidating Hamilton works, it rather gives him extra focus because he enjoys the challenge. However, I was happy to see that the race direction lets Lewis and Max continue their duel. »
Among the drivers on the grid, Sebastian Vettel is one of those who consider a review unnecessary. « I don’t think it’s very useful, I think Lewis had a great race. He won, he was the fastest, period. »
The tone is quite similar on Fernando Alonso’s side, who also expressed himself during the press conference. This incident belongs to the past now, nothing should happen at this point. The stewards have decided that there was no penalty to be given so I imagine there still won’t be any.
The commissioners will render their verdict this Friday.
