Perez is not a fan of the 2022 regulations
Sergio Pérez is quite pessimistic about the upcoming new regulations in F1. According to him, everything will seem bad compared to the current F1 cars.
F1 will introduce a new technical regulation next season that should allow cars to follow each other better, which would logically result in more battles on the track. In return, these new cars will also be slower.
Sergio Pérez shares his opinion on the future single-seaters. “I have been able to drive the 2022 car a few times in the simulator,” the Mexican tells Autosport. “It’s very different from the current regulations. I think the cars we drive today are the best in the history of the sport, so obviously everything will look bad next year compared to these F1 cars. But I hope they will at least be fun to drive.”
Regulatory changes sometimes allow the hierarchy to tighten, as was the case in 2009 (excluding the dominance of Brawn GP in the first Grand Prix races). The Mexican driver however fears that the opposite situation will occur next season, as it has been the case in the past. “When you keep the same regulations for a long time, the gaps narrow,” he explains. “Today, the margin is so small that you can have five or six teams fighting for the podium on Sundays. I think that next year, the team that has done everything right will have a real advantage. It will take years for the others to catch up. Maybe it will have the opposite effect, but I don’t believe that too much. However, I think that Formula 1 needed a change, especially in terms of finances.”
For the first time in its history, F1 has indeed introduced a budget cap. This will be set at $175 million (approximately 150 million euros) per team, before gradually decreasing each year.
