Nico Hülkenberg will do his first IndyCar test
The German driver will be behind the wheel of an Arrow McLaren SP next week. A possible career change is on the cards for the former Formula 1 driver.
Hülkenberg will participate in a test day bringing together six rookies on Monday, October 25. For the German, who will be powered by a Chevrolet engine, this will be his very first stint behind the wheel of an IndyCar. However, these tests do not mean that the former Renault driver will start a career in the US in 2022. Indeed, even if this test proves to be successful, there is no guarantee that Arrow McLaren SP will accelerate the commitment to a third car (Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist already being the two main drivers).
« As soon as we have a third car, which will not be the case at the beginning of next season, we will make it run, explains Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, on Motorsport.com. « We will make a third car run in 2023, that’s for sure and maybe it will happen, at some point, in 2022 ».
Nico Hülkenberg, who made his last appearance behind the wheel of an F1 car last season, has not stepped onto a podium (except for Le Mans 2015) since his GP2 title in 2009. A second career in the United States could give him the necessary passion to step back onto the podium.
