British Grand Prix – Leclerc very close to victory

First podium of the season for Charles Leclerc as he secures second place at Silverstone after a tumultuous race marked by the violent accident of Max Verstappen, who was the leader, hit by Lewis Hamilton.

Altruistic Leclerc following a flying start

The big winner of this accident was Charles Leclerc, who started in fourth position and, after making the best start among the leaders by overtaking Bottas, managed to pass Hamilton and therefore start on pole position during the standing start following the red flag at the end of the first lap of the race.

The Monegasque, disappointed at the end of the race, still reacted with a smile in front of the microphones: “It’s difficult to concede victory after an incredible race, I gave it my all but it wasn’t enough. Congratulations to Lewis (Hamilton) for his win in front of so many fans.”

He also admitted to being surprised by the performance level of his car: “I felt very good in the car, but I lacked a bit of speed. I’m quite disappointed to only finish second, but it’s a pleasant surprise to be so close to victory because after the qualifications, we didn’t expect to be so competitive, especially on the medium tires. However, it was a bit harder on the hard tires, and that’s what cost us the victory in the end.”

I am very proud of my team’s work

The Scuderia is off to a good start to challenge McLaren for third place in the constructor’s championship. The Monegasque is looking forward to the battle until the end: “The rest of the season looks very exciting because the team is working very well and I am very proud of it. We are showing that we are achieving great things, it won’t be easy but we will give our all to come back on top.”

After a few races where he was lagging behind his teammate Carlos Sainz, Leclerc increases his lead in the drivers’ championship with these 18 points scored, and remains 6th in the standings.
