Esteban Ocon is having a good season this year compared to his teammate Fernando Alonso. He held his own in previous seasons against Pérez and Ricciardo but was slightly behind. That was enough to convince Alpine to extend his contract for 3 seasons. What a delight for the 24-year-old driver.
I am delighted to continue with the team beyond this year and it’s fantastic to secure my future with Alpine. We have progressed well together since I joined the team and I intend to continue this adventure.
Next year, Formula 1 will undergo a major turning point with a brand new aero regulation allowing for easier overtaking. These changes are already in the works at Alpine and this is an opportunity for the French team to choose a driver who will be involved in the development of this car and not keep everything secret. It is also an opportunity, with a 3-year extension, to ensure continuity throughout the seasons.
« We face major challenges, especially with the new regulations in 2022. I am confident that we can achieve our goals by working hard together.
Last year with Renault, Ocon had stepped onto his first F1 podium by finishing second behind Pérez while the two Mercedes had lost the lead of the race due to a tire issue in the pit stop.
« I often think back to last year’s Sakhir Grand Prix podium and it gives me even more motivation to create other memorable memories. I am looking forward to approaching this next chapter, but for now, we remain focused on this season. »
Laurent Rossi, the director of Alpine Cars and the F1 team, is obviously also delighted: « We are extremely proud to keep Esteban within the Alpine family. Since his return to the team in 2020, Esteban has gained in confidence and stature to regularly achieve good results and contribute to the development of the car with the team. »
Despite his young age, he is very experienced in Formula 1 and on a positive trajectory due to his maturity and talent behind the wheel. He is a major asset in our team today, but also for the future when facing the challenge of the new regulations. We have full confidence in Esteban to lead the team and the brand to the next level and achieve its long-term goals. Esteban is an asset beyond F1, deeply involved in Alpine’s overall project. His personality and values make him a natural ambassador for Alpine. We are looking forward to continuing our 2021 campaign at our home Grand Prix in France and doing the best job possible on every race weekend,” he concludes.
A few days before the French Grand Prix, this is therefore very beneficial for Alpine both in terms of sports and communication.
Note that Alonso has not yet provided any information about his contract. Esteban Ocon being managed by Toto Wolff, rumors were circulating that he could be a threat to Russell and Bottas for the second seat at Mercedes.
On his side, his seat at Alpine was threatened by Gasly in particular. This is clarifying and closing some doors very early in the season.
