As Max Verstappen has just crashed his car on the straight and while we are under a safety car regime, Latifi continued to drive on the track instead of going to the pits to allow the track marshals to remove Verstappen’s Red Bull safely.
The instruction given by his engineer was clear “Stay outside, stay outside”. Pilot William followed it but it was the wrong decision that was being communicated to him.
Due to the non-compliance with Articles 39.11, 39.5, and 39.8 of the FIA sporting regulations, the stewards had imposed a 10-second penalty to be served at the Canadian driver’s pit stop.
The standard penalty is a passage through the pit lane. Latifi also overtook drivers who were entering the pit lane, so he receives a stronger penalty.
Finally, since the driver did not apply the penalty due to the low number of laps remaining after the last red flag, this penalty was turned into a 30-second addition to his time at the finish line.
The Williams driver finishes last in this Grand Prix which saw the retirement of his teammate a few laps earlier, as well as Verstappen, Stroll, and Ocon.
The Canadian driver also loses 3 points on his pilot’s license. He now has only 8 left.
