Monaco Grand Prix – Penalty for Schumacher on the starting grid
Haas driver Mick Schumacher has received a 5-place grid penalty for the Monaco Grand Prix for a gearbox change following his crash during the third free practice session on Saturday morning.
During a weekend that was shaping up to be complicated for the American team, it was ultimately not the expected driver who made mistakes as Mick Schumacher suffered a crash right at the end of the third free practice, depriving him of the qualifications and causing significant damage to his car.
A heavily damaged frame
These damages forced his team to change the chassis of his VF-21, and to replace his gearbox before it reaches the 6 races planned by the regulations before replacing it without penalties.
The FIA has therefore imposed a 5-place grid penalty on the German rookie, who did not take part in the qualifying session and was therefore due to start from the back of the grid.
The German driver had been warned, as an error on his part during the second practice session had caused slight damage to his rear suspension. These accidents will certainly not be to the liking of the team director Günther Steiner, who had reminded his drivers to “stay away from the rails” during this Grand Prix weekend in Monaco.
