Monaco Grand Prix – Sainz the outsider’s rage
The Spanish Ferrari driver did not hide his frustration after the qualifying session of the Monaco Grand Prix. 4th place but big regrets for Carlos Sainz!
It was a great qualifying session for Scuderia Ferrari this Saturday in Monaco with the pole position of the local driver, Charles Leclerc, and the fourth place of the new Ferrari driver this season, Carlos Sainz.
If satisfaction is almost total for Leclerc who clinches his first pole position at home (let’s wait and see if the gearbox was not damaged in the crash at the end of the session), the frustration is there on the side of the Spanish driver who sees his dreams of pole position fade away.
Sainz finished in second place in all of the free practice sessions, outperforming his teammate twice. His displayed pace was of high quality, but above all, of impeccable consistency. However, with Leclerc’s crash in the final moments of the race, the Spanish driver was unable to improve his time, securing him the fourth place on the grid. This is Sainz’s best qualifying result at the wheel of a Ferrari.
However, when questioned after the session to find out if he was satisfied with his performance and his fourth position, he replied on Canal+ microphone: “It’s always great to see a Ferrari in pole position, but we should have been first and second. I’m not happy because I have had very few opportunities in my life to be in pole position and I missed this chance. I had a lot of pace. I didn’t have the chance to go for pole position.”
Carlos Sainz: « I am not happy because I have had very little luck in my life to be in pole position and I missed this chance. »
The team principal of the Ferrari team, Mattia Binotto, also commented on Carlos Sainz’s disappointment, despite his good result.
« I think he is a little disappointed, especially because he thought he could do better. But that’s part of the race.
» acknowledged Binotto, still on Canal+ microphone.
