Vettel had an eye problem during Thursday’s practice

This Thursday, we were able to hear the four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, complaining of an eye discomfort on the radio, making him feel like he was bleeding.

« I feel like my eye is bleeding »,” Vettel told his engineer before being asked to come back to the pit. However, the German driver chose to continue.

« Okay, I’ll continue »,” replied Vettel. « Either I am super emotional, or there is something stuck in my eye!”

Speaking after the session, Vettel explained that the problem had gradually worsened throughout FP2. He also revealed that his team, Aston Martin, had made him a paper eyepatch as a joke.

“I’ve never had my eye bleeding, but I felt like it was kind of the case,” Vettel said.

« I don’t know what was happening. In the first round, something got into my eye, and it got worse in the second round. So the team was pretty nice and they gave me this eyepatch. So I think I’ll keep it and it will protect me for the rest of the weekend. »

Interviewed on what it was like to drive in Monaco with only one eye, Vettel joked: « I do not recommend it! It’s not as fun as with two. »

The four-time German world champion is not having a great start to the season. He has not scored any points yet with his new team. After a very difficult year in 2020 with Ferrari, Vettel is still far from the expected results. However, he felt satisfied with his performance during the tests. The German driver outperformed his teammate in the first two free practice sessions, always finishing in the top 10.

« I was pretty happy this morning, we got into a good rhythm quickly », said Vettel.

« All that matters is Saturday afternoon »

« In the afternoon, I lost sight a little. But overall, it’s good. It will be tight, it’s always tight here, and obviously tight in the midfield. Ideally, we can continue on this momentum. All that matters is Saturday afternoon. »
