Mick Schumacher is aiming for a Q2 this season in F1
The young German driver, Mick Schumacher remains confident in his chances of qualifying for Q2 this season, despite the weak performances of the Haas VF-21.
Formula 2 champion last year, Mick Schumacher is gradually gaining confidence in the early stages of the season and is starting to find his rhythm. However, his car remains generally underperforming, notably because the American team has chosen not to develop their cars for this season in order to focus on the 2022 revolution.
During the preseason, Mick Schumacher had stated his aim of qualifying for Q2 this 2021 season. Although he only managed to achieve an 18th place in qualifying, the young German driver remains optimistic about this goal, as he expressed: “It’s totally a realistic goal. Obviously, I would be unhappy if it didn’t happen this year. We continue to do everything we can to make it happen. There will be circuits that may suit us better. I think that considering this track is not one of our strongest, we still managed to produce a very good lap time. We were quite close to Kimi [Räikkönen] in hindsight. So yes, I think we can be very happy and hope for a Q2 in the next out of the 18 races, so I hope we will achieve it,” Mick Schumacher said.

Williams and Alfa Romeo are direct competitors of the Haas team to reach Q2. During the first four Grand Prix of the season, Mick regularly failed by just two tenths to reach his direct competitors for Q2 access. During an interview with the driver at Autosport, he stated that he lost two tenths in Q1 in Barcelona, which would have allowed him to be on par with Räikkönen.
« I think on this lap I lost about two tenths, so it would be equal to what Kimi did. Therefore, we can be quite happy. It’s just a matter of putting these lap times together and reducing the gap between the sectors. I think overall, we’re on the right track and we can be satisfied with the performance [on Saturday]. », he explained.
