It is a very important supplier to Renault but also to several Formula 1 teams in the past and yet it is relatively unknown. Mécachrome specializes in precision mechanics and for 20 years has been manufacturing and machining the Formula 1 engines for Renault in F1 and its customer teams.
If Renault designs and programs its engines, the parts and assembly are therefore subcontracted to an external provider. Now transformed into Alpine, the Enstone and Viry-Chatillon team has reaffirmed its trust in Mecachrome for the manufacturing of parts and assembly of V6 engines.
This 2021 season, Alpine F1 Team will be the only team to benefit from the V6 Renault engine, rebranded Alpine, manufactured by Mecachrome. Indeed, McLaren switched to a contract with Mercedes this season, which also powers Aston Martin (Racing Point) and Williams. Note that Honda powers 2 teams and Ferrari 3 teams. Therefore, Mecachrome will face a decrease in its production of F1 engines this season.
The statement specifies that the contract is signed with Alpine’s sports parent company: Alpine Racing SAS for a duration of 4 years. It concerns the manufacturing of parts such as cylinder heads, crankcases, and therefore engine assembly.
